Project partner AZTI presented SEA2LAND at the International Fisheries and Aquaculture Conference organized by Eurofish International Organisation in cooperation with the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture. The event took place at the Madrid Marriott Auditorium Hotel & Conference Center in Madrid, Spain, on 25-26 September 2024. The conference explored how fisheries and aquaculture can adopt circular economy practices to enhance sustainability. The program was divided into three key sessions: “Decarbonizing the Fishing Fleet,” “Managing Side and Waste Streams in Aquaculture,” and “Handling Side and Waste Streams in Fisheries.” Leading experts from around the world shared innovative ideas, best practices, and future solutions.

Attendees included representatives from Spain, other European countries, the FAO, the Black Sea region, the Caucasus, and Central Asia, bringing together government institutions, civil society, the private sector, and intergovernmental organizations. This diverse gathering aimed to inspire sustainable approaches for the future of fisheries and aquaculture.

Among the attendees was Bruno Iñarra, a senior Researcher at  AZTI. Bruno holds a PhD in Chemical Engineering from the University of the Basque Country and has extensive experience in the field of extraction, purification, and stabilization of active compounds of natural origin. He works in the area of Efficient and Sustainable Processes at AZTI, where his work focuses on reducing waste in the food chain through different approaches, always taking into account the sustainability of the different solutions. At the event he discussed research on the utilization of by-products and effluents from fish processing industries as nutrient sources for producing fertilizers and biostimulants within the framework of the SEA2LAND project.
